After a DUI arrest, it can be hard to know what comes next. The process often feels confusing, time-sensitive, and emotionally charged, especially when driving privileges, court requirements, and future outcomes are involved.
At Crossroads Counseling Services, we provide professional DUI evaluations that meet all State of Illinois requirements and support individuals as they navigate the next steps toward resolution, compliance, and reinstatement of driving privileges. When appropriate, evaluations may also include recommendations for substance abuse counseling, helping address underlying patterns related to alcohol or substance use.
Our goal is to make the evaluation process clear, thorough, and respectful, while ensuring every requirement is properly met.
Why a DUI Evaluation Is Required in Illinois
In Illinois, a DUI evaluation is mandatory following a DUI arrest. This evaluation is required whether the individual is preparing for sentencing, seeking a Monitoring Device Driving Permit (MDDP), or working toward restricted or full driving privilege reinstatement through the Secretary of State.
The evaluation plays a critical role in determining risk level and identifying appropriate education, intervention, or treatment recommendations. Courts and the Secretary of State rely on this evaluation to make informed decisions, which is why accuracy, compliance, and documentation matter.
What Happens During a DUI Evaluation
DUI evaluations at Crossroads Counseling Services are structured, in-depth, and conducted face to face by licensed and certified professionals.
The evaluation includes a comprehensive clinical interview that reviews substance use history, legal and driving history, and any prior treatment or evaluations. This process allows the evaluator to understand patterns, risk factors, and relevant context rather than relying on a single data point.
In addition to the interview, evaluators review required documentation, including objective test scores, blood alcohol content (BAC) results, and a Court Purposes Driving Abstract. A Law Enforcement Sworn Report or equivalent documentation from the arresting agency is also required.
Each component of the evaluation contributes to a complete and accurate assessment.
Illinois Regulatory Standards and Compliance
All DUI evaluations at Crossroads Counseling Services follow the Illinois Administrative Code, Title 77, Section 2060.503. This regulatory framework governs every step of the process, from informed consent and history collection to documentation, confidentiality, and reporting.
Evaluators are required to collect a comprehensive substance use history, administer appropriate assessment tools, and assign a risk classification based on established criteria. Uniform Report forms are completed and delivered in accordance with state guidelines, ensuring evaluations are accepted by courts and the Secretary of State.
This structured approach protects both the individual and the integrity of the process.
Risk Classification and Recommendations
Following the evaluation, individuals are assigned a risk level based on clinical findings and state criteria. Each risk level carries specific education or treatment requirements.
- Minimal Risk typically requires a minimum of 10 hours of DUI Risk Education.
- Moderate Risk requires 10 hours of education plus 12 hours of early intervention. In some cases, evaluators may recommend substance abuse counseling as part of the broader treatment care plan when clinical criteria are met. Early intervention is structured over at least four weeks and limited to no more than three hours per day. Additional treatment or continuing care may be recommended if clinically indicated.
- Significant Risk requires 10 hours of education, 20 hours of substance use treatment, and a continuing care plan.
- High Risk requires a minimum of 75 hours of substance use treatment along with ongoing continuing care.
These recommendations are clearly documented and provided for court and Secretary of State purposes.
What to Bring to Your Evaluation
To avoid delays, individuals should arrive prepared with all required documentation. This includes a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license. A Court Purposes Driving Abstract obtained directly from the Illinois Secretary of State is required. Online printouts are not accepted.
Individuals must also bring a Law Enforcement Sworn Report or official documentation from the arresting officer, as well as chemical test results such as BAC results or refusal documentation. These results are often included within the law enforcement reports.
Our team can assist with questions about obtaining the correct documents before your appointment.
